How to Get a Fishing Rod

Fishing rods enter your inventory through enemy drops, chest loot, or quest rewards. Players frequently acquire their first rod as a randomized loot drop from goblins or reward chests inside dungeons. In your inventory, fishing poles often display distinct visuals resembling colorful long swords or pieces of coral in white, orange, or pinkish tones.

The primary quest source for a guaranteed rod is Drew, an NPC located in the town of Pondelhawk. Drew explains that he spent his entire morning tending to petunias and needs someone to catch dinner for his family while he checks inventory back at his shop. Speaking to Drew provides the Old Reliable fishing rod. Catching any single fish and returning it to Drew completes his objective, granting bonus gold and allowing you to keep the rod.

Casting and Reeling Controls

Fishing requires standing near safe open bodies of water, including coastal shorelines and rivers outside Pondelhawk. Equip the rod by assigning it to a numbered hotbar slot and holding it in your hands before approaching the water.

  1. Press and hold the left mouse button to begin casting. A targeting indicator appears on the water surface showing the landing spot.
  2. Release the mouse button to cast the line into the water.
  3. Wait for the bobber to dip. A visual prompt indicates when a fish bites.
  4. Tap the left mouse button during the initial bite to trigger the catch sequence.
  5. Hold and release the left mouse button to balance your reel tension against the moving fish meter until the catch bar fills completely.

Catches receive an efficiency percentage and a rating based on your timing precision. Ratings span from rough catches at the bottom to steady catches, A-tier catches, and S-tier perfect catches at 100% efficiency. Each completed catch awards experience points to your fishing profession, progressing your level from novice ranks upward as outlined in the beginner guide.

Fish Varieties and Documented Species

The waters surrounding Pondelhawk contain numerous aquatic species spanning different rarities, weights, and appearances. Individual fish weights vary widely, ranging from light one-pound catches to specimens weighing over 100 pounds.

  • Common species: Normal herring, shipfish, and bone fish.
  • Uncommon species: Blue bloater, mild calf, crumbfish crimpler, and zesty gold fish.
  • Rare and exotic species: Jaded dagger nose, plague scale, and Aaron proby, which possesses a single eye and functional wings.
  • Heavyweight and unique specimens: Hollow hawk, razorback bass, hard-headed assfish, cupcake, banche fan, ninja pen, and gore skipper.

Certain NPCs specifically request these catches. On the beach, an NPC named Björner asks you to catch 10 pickled herrings to help him create experimental regional beverages, tying water gathering into brewing recipes.

Fishing Leaderboards, Economy, and Water Hazards

Pondelhawk features physical leaderboard stands near gathering zones. These boards track community records for the heaviest catches, where top player weights exceed 115 pounds.

Fish serve as a direct source of income. You can sell your surplus catch to town merchants such as the blacksmith or tavern shopkeepers to fund equipment upgrades or spend coins on tavern gambling. When playing the public demo, ensure merchant transaction balances update properly when selling large stacks in a single visit.

Players must also distinguish standard fishing spots from dark environmental rifts. Approaching ominous purple water pools outside town can trigger an encounter event rather than a fishing sequence, opening a demon portal that spawns a beholder-style rift boss with timed monster waves. Stick to clear lakes, rivers, and ocean shorelines to avoid accidental combat encounters while gathering.
